About Katie Oliver
Katie Oliver loves romantic comedies, characters who "meet cute," Richard Curtis films, and Prosecco (not necessarily in that order). She currently resides in South Florida with her husband and two parakeets.
Katie’s been writing since she was eight, and has a box crammed with (mostly unfinished) novels to prove it. With her sons grown and gone, she decided to get serious and write more (and hopefully, better) stories. She even finishes most of them.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
Well, I'm a writer with nine romantic comedy books published so far. (I still get a little thrill each time I put down 'writer' in answer to the 'Occupation?' question on forms.) I like dark chocolate, Prosecco, am a terrible procrastinator, and in my head, I'm still nine years old.
2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?
I like to bring something absorbing and/or entertaining. Right now I'm reading 'Emma' by Alexander McCall Smith; next up is Daniel Silva's 'The English Girl.' On my Kindle I'm currently reading 'Christmas Down Under' by Marion Lennox and just finished an interesting, as-yet unpublished time travel novella by Michelle Bourne Durant.
3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look?
Oh, that's an easy one! I'd pack my sunblock, a good paperback, stash a few snacks in my beach bag, and head for the shore. Our favorite Florida spot is Bathtub Reef...there are no big waves to deal with, lots of shells, and miles of clear, blue-green ocean. I'd get in the water for a bit, dry off...then sit down to read a few chapters of whatever book I've brought along. Bliss!
4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?
I love to bake. Cookies, mostly, or brownies. I used to collect limited edition Barbie dolls, but I don't anymore…mostly because I've run out of space to store them!
5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?
I find inspiration in magazine articles or in newspapers...or in an overheard random conversation...or I might see a photograph of an interesting person...things like that. Some of the ideas are good, in that they're useable; but some aren't, and get discarded. In order for a story to have 'legs,' i.e., a workable plot, it needs to be more than just a half-formed idea or situation. But if that idea can stretch to become a story with conflict, tension, interesting characters - then I know it will sustain a book-length plot.
6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?
Probably Liz Talbert from 'Low Country Boneyard' by Susan M. Boyer. She's a private investigator who assists with pre-trial investigations for criminal defense attorneys. Liz is both entertaining and smart – an unbeatable combination. I love the series and only just discovered it recently. It's set in the low country of South Carolina and each book features an intriguing mystery for Liz to unravel.
7. What's your favorite reading spot?
Stretched out on the cushioned wicker love seat on our screened porch, with the ceiling fan spinning lazily and a glass of lemonade close at hand.
8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?
I live in South Florida, so the beach is a daily destination (when I'm not writing, of course!). But in my heart of hearts, I really love the change of seasons from summer to autumn - the bright, colorful leaves, the pumpkins, the chilly weather.
So I think my favorite holiday destination would have to be a return to the beautiful Northern Virginia countryside in the fall.
9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?
My advice? Write the story you most want to read, the story that makes you happy. Don’t worry about ‘the hot new genre,’ or ‘the next big thing.’ Just write the book you want to write, and your passion will shine through on every page.
10. What can we expect from you in the future?
I'm aiming to bring my books back home to the American market. I have a couple of projects underway, and lots of ideas. I'm really looking forward to starting off in a new direction.
