Reading in the Sun - Interview with Jennifer Silverwood & Giveaway

About Jennifer Silverwood

Jennifer Silverwood was raised deep in the heart of Texas and has been spinning yarns a mile high since childhood. In her spare time she reads and writes and tries to sustain her wanderlust, whether it's the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania, the highlands of Ecuador or a road trip to the next town. Always on the lookout for her next adventure, in print or reality, she dreams of one day proving to the masses that everything really is better in Texas. She is the author of the Heaven's Edge and Wylder Tales series, Stay and Silver Hollow.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I became a mom this last December, and it really is true what they say. Becoming a mom didn't radically change me, just made me more than I was. Because of my baby boy, I'm a better person, a far less selfish person. I'm also a writer, a wannabe artist & musician (when it's just me) and a believer in bigger dreams.

2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?

Favorite holiday books are those fat paperbacks, a good epic fantasy or pulp horror, though I've definitely indulged in a few cheesy romances.

3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?

A perfect sunny day doesn't exist to me, thanks to my super pale skin and family history with cancer. I actually prefer mountains to beach and if I must be outside for any length of time, a wide brim floppy hat will go on my head. So let's say a shady retreat in the mountains surrounded by trees, with sunscreen on hand.

4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?

Playing and caring for my baby takes up most of my time, so it's rare when I get to indulge in extra hobbies, but I love playing piano and sketching with pastels.

5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

Like all writers, I've been influenced by my favorite authors as a child, by the fantastical movies I love and the adventures I took growing up. I have been around the world, from Craiova, Romania, to Edinburgh, Scotland and south to Quito, Ecuador. Different peoples and cultures and music inspire me and challenge my perspective. And sometimes, ideas would come to me while sitting in my backyard "secret garden."

6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?

I would be Beauty from Robin McKinley's "Beauty." Not only is "Beauty" my favorite Beauty & the Beast adaptation, period, but Beauty's character is so solid and not your typical heroine. She is too busy caring for her father and sisters and doing the tough work to mourn their loss of wealth. No matter what challenges she faces, she does it bravely and selflessly.

7. What's your favorite reading spot?

Reading on our front porch with our potted flowers and the pine forest a few feet away is pure bliss, unless that Texas heat cranks up.

8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?

Favorite holiday destination used to be our family land. The farmhouse and property has been in my since the 1800's and my kin have lived here since Texas was still Mexican territory. Now we live on the land, so I'm on the market for a new favorite destination.

9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?

A sunny story doesn't necessarily take place on a tropical island, or a Nicholas Sparks beach where love conquers all. Sometimes, you have to find that ray of sunshine in the darkness. A lot of the fantasy I've written lately takes place in dark settings, and the heroine must either become the light or find a way to bring it to others. The important thing is to find that light within yourself. Our lives are filled with struggle of every kind. So no matter where your character lives, make sure to help them find their inner light.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I'm working on the sequel, "Scarred Beauty", Volume 2 in my Wylder Tales series. Next year I have plans to publish another novella in the series, as well as the third and final volume in the trilogy. I am also currently working on the third in my young adult science fiction series, Tamn, a Heaven's Edge novella. Beyond those ambitions I have a stack of sequels and manuscripts in mind. We'll see what real life allows time for and I'll get back to you next year. ;)

    1. Thanks Diane! Wow, I bet! Unless you wear super warm clothes, right? How cold are your winters? In Texas, we're lucky if it ices once, let alone actually snow.

  7. Your reading spot sounds ever so lovely ... as long as there's no big bad wolf venturing out of the woods. ;-)

    1. The wolves here don't come out in the open too often, fortunately, lol. You have a lot more to fear from snakes than wolves, bears and cougars.
