About Catherine Evans
Catherine Evans is a city-born throwback to country genes. After completing an environmental biology degree, she desperately needed to move to the country. A job in agriculture was the perfect escape. After spending eighteen years in agricultural research and gaining a Masters degree in Agriculture, Cath has a passion for rural life.
Now living on the south coast of NSW, Australia, a large part of her heart belongs across the mountain ranges in the red dust.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m Catherine Evans, and I’m here representing the “Dollar For A Dream” girls, Jennie Jones and Lisa Ireland. We’re 3 Australian authors who are friends even though we live across the country from each other. We’ve recently written books set in the same small rural town, which was such fun!
2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?
I read anything and everything I can manage. But I find my husband likes long distance driving holidays and I can’t read in the car so on most of my holidays I see a lot of places, but read little (it shocks me, I tell you!!). I used to have holidays where I could devour a huge big book, or a whole pile of books, spending as much time as I could reading.
3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?
I’d wake up camping on a beach. The sun would be sparkling across the water. Breakfast would be cooked on an open fire. Then I’d spend the day swimming, reading, eating, fishing, and wandering along the beach. As the evening sets in, a bunch of friends would arrive and we’d cook around a fire, then build it up to a bonfire where we’d eat our delicious meal, talk, tell campfire stories and sing if the mood takes us. The stars would be sparkling in a clear sky after the most perfect day of sunshine and surf.
4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?
I live near a beach so I love walking there. I’m a nature nut, so I’m always taking photos and poking about. Sometimes I get some good shots, but mostly I enjoy discovering the many amazing critters that live around me. I love food, so fresh food markets and lots of time cooking is fun. And I love finding a great place to eat.
5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?
Everywhere. People, places, events. Any random thing can spark a story in my head. I don’t have time to write all the stories I find inspiration for!
6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?
I’d like to be James Bond. I know that’s silly, but his lifestyle is just so crazy I’d love to experience it for a few days. Exotic places. Women falling over themselves for him. Excitement and daring where you aren’t killed. Mingling with the rich and famous, while secretly spying. How exciting (big grin).
7. What's your favorite reading spot?
My husband hates it, but I love sprawling in the sun on our front lawn. It has thick soft grass, and the sun comes a filtered through trees around us so I think it’s perfect. He worries about me looking like a kid when I’m way too old to do that!
8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?
Lord Howe Island. It’s a small island off the east coast of Australia. It’s absolutely stunning. There are mountains. Very few cars – just push bikes and walking for visitors. Reefs, lagoons and beaches. Heaps of nature. Great food. It’s quiet and peaceful, with a limited number of residents and visitors, so it’s never crowded.
9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?
I always think sunny days are hopeful and happy. They team with possibilities and life. That’s what I’d try to include in a sunny story.
10. What can we expect from you in the future?
More Australian rural stories from me. We’re talking of writing another story set in our town of Dulili because we enjoyed the first ones so much! It’s lovely writing with friends.
