Book Review & Giveaway - Intertwined by Jenn Marie

About Jenn Marie

Jenn Marie currently lives in sunny California with her wonderful husband and their runt kitty, Chloe. When she's not writing Young Adult Fiction, she can be found reading, plotting or spending time with her crazy, lovable family. Current obsessions include the movie, Frozen, the New Girl series, Arcade Fire's latest album, and avocados. Seriously, she can't get enough of it! Writing, for her, is a passion that refuses to be under prioritized. No matter what's going on in her life, whether good or bad, writing is always there to lift her spirits.

Intertwined is my first novel, though definitely not the first time that I've written it. The concept first struck me when I was fourteen years old, and it's been a labor of love ever since.

I'm currently working on the second book in the YA series and can't wait to share it with you!

Review by Anniek

Elizabeth Parker, or Liz, is a teenager who loves to spend her summers with her aunt and cousin April. Liz is quiet, responsible and she scares easily. The fact that April has a tarantula in her bedroom freaks Liz out every time. April is a daredevil. She has spent some time on a haunted plantation and was able to pick up a piece of paper. Nobody, until April, has ever been able to take something out of that plantation. When April gets an invitation for an initiation Liz immediately knows something is up.

April's initiation will take place at the haunted plantation. April needs to go inside and will be locked up until she finds the clues and the objects she needs to find. To achieve that she has to follow directions. After finding ten clues April will get a digital code that will unlock the front door. Liz thinks that this initiation is nothing more than a setup to get pieces outside the plantation, which is why she tries to prevent April from going. When the people who came up with this initiation mistake Liz for April, Liz finds herself locked up instead all of a sudden.

Adam has been living with his aunt ever since she got mental health problems. He takes care of her and works at the local bar. Adam is also inside of the plantation when Liz is locked up. He is trying to document everything that goes on there. Every summer between July 20th and August 13th the paranormal activity is at its highest and Adam wants to know more about it. Adam and Liz are both in for a scare when they find out the hauntings are not only residual, but seem to be capable of doing harm as well. Will they be able to get out in time before something horrible happens?

Liz is a great person. She goes out of her way to prevent her cousin from getting in trouble, also if this means getting herself harmed in the process. Even though she's easily afraid Liz shows remarkable strength when she has to. Both she and Adam are strong characters and Jenn Marie has done a great job giving their personalities a lot of depth. Adam and Liz are very different, but they make a good team when they work together.

I'm a big fan of shows like Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters International. I'll admit I watch them all. If you like this kind of shows you should really pick up Intertwined. Jenn Marie has written a gripping and chilling story, which will give you your maximum scare. If you look at the picture of the haunted plantation you'll instantly understand why. I made the mistake to read this book at night. If you do the same, trust me, you'll be just as creeped out as I was. With many interesting twists and turns Intertwined kept me on the edge of my seat and I absolutely can't wait until the next book in this series comes out. Jenn Marie is an author I will definitely keep following.

  8. What's the significance of the rose at the centre of the cover design (or would that be telling!)?

  25. I'd like to understand the meaning of the cover. I can see a black and white snake joined to each other by each snake taking the tail of the other into its mouth. Are the two colors like good (white) and evil (black)? Are they the two girls?

  26. Haunted plantation? Eeeeeek! I would need to read this one in the daytime (on a very sunny day, of course) with ALL of the lights on, and all of the blinds/curtains/shades open. I would also need to have some cheerful music on, and to not be home alone.
    (I'm actually quite serious!)
This does look like a wonderful book. And I find it so interesting that the idea for it first came to the author when she was 14 years old!
