Vampire - Gwen's Journals I-V by Charmain Marie Mitchell Interview, Review & Giveaway

About Charmain Marie Mitchell

Having ran a succesful Garden Centre then a Floristry Buisness, Charmain Mitchell never really had time to concentrate on her passion for writing.

Throughout her life, Charmain has wanted to become an author, but family and business commitments stood in the way and her writing consisted of a few short stories on the rare occasion that she had time to write them.

In late 2012 a freak accident finally allowed time for Charmain to indulge in her passion for writing. She says of this "Then a few weeks ago I fell over whilst trying to catch chickens and ended up breaking my ankle! Quite a comical way to break your ankle - I know; especially when I have kept horses for the majority of my life and have never yet broken any bones where they are concerned!

Suddenly I had six clear weeks in which I wouldn't be able to move very well? Help! How was I going to cope with doing zilch for that long? Then I thought maybe I should do a bit of writing, and that is what I did, and the strange thing is, is that I haven't been able to stop since!"

She says of her writing

"I love writing, it is truly my passion! I love the way that through words I can make people think and feel differently, feel passion, sometimes pain, and get totally lost in my words. I love the fact that a brilliant writer will live forever, and will in some way influence generations to come. Is it not marvelous that we can still look back to writing from over two thousand years ago and believe in it and still learn from it?

The human imagination is a wonderous thing, it creates and then brings to life stories on a screen, and sometimes we believe in these stories so much that they become our passion. I'm talking about for instance: The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, and Star wars etc... I think we actually forget sometimes that all of these stories were started with a simple idea on a piece of paper, and they grew to be something that some of us forget started from the author's imagination".

Charmain Mitchell lives in a small rural village, nestled in the south downs of the UK with her 4 children, husband, 2 cats, and countless chickens, ducks and quail.

Interview

1. Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

I live in a small village in the South Downs, on the south Coast of England and have been a full time author since 2012 after being laid up for weeks with a broken leg, which happened catching a chicken! Prior to this, I ran a successful floristry business. Most of my time is taken up with family and animals, so sometimes can find it very hard to find time to indulge my passion and write.

2. I love the look and feel of your website, which totally matches your books. Did you create your website yourself?

I design and create all my book covers myself, so once I had the theme for the “Vampire” Series, my other half used this to create the website…so all mistakes on there are his fault! The website will be due for an overhaul in a few months though.

3. You have worked in the floristry business. What are your favorite flowers and why?

I love white and yellow Roses. They are pure, simple and beautiful with a lovely fragrance which reminds me of hot summer days.

4. Writing is your passion. How do you come up with the ideas for your stories?

This is actually very hard to answer, as I have no set way or inspiration for new ideas. Sometimes, I’ll just get a theme pop in to my head and I’ll take it from there. Usually, I start with the title, then work the story out based around the theme and title.

5. Why did you decide to write about Vampires?

I wanted to write historical fiction, but with a twist which I felt would appeal to a broader market and what better thing than Vampires? I was inspired partly by all the modern and teen vampire books out there but I feel they have lost the spooky atmosphere, so in my books, I try to go back to a more traditional type of Vampire tale.

6. Gwen is a beautiful character with all of her rights and wrongs. Who did you have in mind when you created her?

Thank you. I had no one specific in mind, but I wanted her to be very conflicted and always fighting a battle with herself. So I guess maybe there’s a bit of all of us in Gwen.

7. Your blog is called Woman With A Dream. Can you tell us about your dreams?

If you have read my stories you’ll know my mind can be very strange and I can dream about the most bizarre things and stories. But my aspiration is to be successful with my writing and open peoples own imagination with my words.

8. You have quite a household with your family and your animals. What does a typical day look like for you?

Chaos, chaos and more chaos! I don’t think I have a typical day, as my life revolves around my family and animals. I have 4 children (5 if you include my other half J), 2 granddaughters, 2 cats, 3 ducks, 2 silver pheasants, 4 golden pheasants, 6 quail, a few chickens and have just got a horse and a puppy, so you can imagine, my life can be very very busy at times. If I’m lucky, I get a few hours to sit down and write. The one daily constant in my life though is that I love to get into bed at night and spend a couple of hours reading.

9. What is the most impressive book you have read this year?

I have recently read George R.R. Martins Game of Throne series. After watching the TV serial to see what all the fuss was about, I got hooked and read all the books in just over a week

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I am currently working on 4 books (I’m a glutton for punishment!). The first is Distant Chant, which is the third book in the Mary Howard Supernatural Mysteries. Lust for Blood 2, an anthology of short horror tales which is a follow up to my 2013 release (unsurprisingly called Lust for Blood), and To Be a King, which re-imagines the mind of Henry VIII with his own thoughts and feelings written in retrospective diary form. The last book I’m working on is slightly different from my other books and is an anthology of love stories and should be available in the next few weeks.

Review by Anniek

Gwen is still a young girl when her whole world falls apart. Pregnant and in love she is on her way to meet Tom, the man she is going to marry. Instead of having a romantic night with Tom she discovers a bloodbath at his house. She's being confronted by the vampires responsible and she gets a choice, become a vampire after her child is born or die. Gwen chooses to live knowing that her child will be raised by vampires and that she will become a vampire also.

Robert is the first vampire. He and his wife will raise the child that Gwen is carrying. While she's living with Robert it doesn't take long for them to become intimate. His wife is not a fool and is trying to get rid of Gwen before she can do more damage. Robert is a charismatic man. He seems kind from time to time, but he gives nothing without getting something in return. His actions portray how cruel he really is, only Gwen can't help but fall in love with him.

In her journals Gwen writes about her life. She's wondering if she has lived long enough. Gwen is a vampire and she does what she needs to do to survive, but even after many years she hasn't forgotten what it felt like to be human. I really liked that about her. She makes choices with her heart and this gets her in trouble plenty of times. I think she is very brave and smart. Gwen is on a quest to find out more about Robert being the first vampire. When she has the choice to erase the existence of vampires or to follow her heart once again which path will she choose?

Charmain Marie Mitchell has created a very intriguing read by telling Gwen's story in journal form. It feels like she is really talking to you. In every book you'll get to know more about her and also more about why she makes certain choices. This made it very easy for me to connect with her and to understand why she is the way she is. The scenes are very graphic and detailed. I always like it a lot when I can picture the story in my head.

Gwen's Journals were a fantastic read. I've read many vampire stories already, but these journals are refreshing and new. While reading you will find yourself flying through the pages. If you are a fan of the vampire genre you will absolutely enjoy these journals.
