Blurb

Finding Sarah is a heart-warming, charming and original love story.

Sarah, a mother of grown children, finds herself without a husband and starts over in the sleepy village of Lower Nutton. But a chance meeting with a mysterious stranger wakens something inside her. Something long forgotten.

Can people from two different worlds really find happiness together? In a village where everyone knows everyone, nothing remains private for long…

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

My name is Wendy and I grew up on the south coast of England. I used to be a doctor in a life pre-kids and if you’d asked me 25 years ago what I wanted to be, it would have been a forensic pathologist, unmarried, with no kids. (I watched a TV series as a kid, called The Mistress – she kept rabbits and guinea pigs and lived in a flat, running her own business – seemed good to me!) That’s life for you; never works out the way you predict. These days you can find me clearing up after 2 very messy boys, 3 if you count my husband, or at my laptop, dreaming.

2) Finding Sarah is an unusual love story, what inspired you to write it?

I was looking around for an idea, when I visited a ploughing match near my home. Whilst there, I spotted a rather dapper man looking a bit different to the rest and then a minute later, who should walk into the field, but the vicar and his wife and I thought: What if…

3) Your novels are always about real life. Are they also based on real events/people or are they entirely made up?

No, entirely made up after the intial idea. But I like to keep things realistic and make my heroines and heroes for that matter, life-like, so that anyone can imagine the same things happening to them. My settings are usually somewhere I’ve lived or been, but the people are entirely fictional.

4) You’ve designed the cover of Finding Sarah yourself. Could you explain how that works?

Oh yes, my new joy, covers! I spent AGES searching for a set of 4 similar images for my series, trying out different themes and ideas, and finally landed on these. I have tried to keep to the same few colours and fonts and I have an ancient photo editing piece of software that lets me add script to the pictures. I’ve loved doing them. I’ve also picked an image that reflects the heroine/story for each and in making sure a paperback was available, I thought that if you’d paid the extra for something to sit on your bookcase, you wanted it to be pretty and, to me, that’s what I’ve achieved.

5) What are your 3 favourite romantic books?

The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks. Loved it. Cried.

From This Day Forward, by Deborah Cox. Passionate. Exotic.

Dreaming Of You, by Lisa Kleypas. Exciting. Dangerous.

6) Finding Sarah is the first part of a series. Can you tell a bit more about it?

The series is set in Lower Nutton, a little rural village much like you’d find in Herefordshire. Book one is about Sarah, who moves in after splitting up with her husband and discovers a mystery man in the village. Book 2 is Carrie-Ann’s story, the girl who takes over at Nutt Hill after Sarah leaves. She’s in love with Tom, but he never seems to notice. Book 3 is about Tom’s brother, Luke who bumps into a woman in the village, and she somehow changes him. And book 4 is Michelle’s story (Carrie-Ann’s sister), about her time babysitting a posh lad adrift in the sticks. They’ve all been part of me for so long, it’s strange finally releasing them into the world.

7) What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Falling in love with the perfect man every day. (No, hubby, not you! ;-) )

8) What do you like best about Sarah? And what do you like best about Nick?

I like Sarah’s compassion. I like that she wants the best for everyone and battles her demons to do whatever that is. Nick, I like his passion. He feels things deeply and has tried to hold onto his emotions for too long. Sarah seems to be the key.

9) What does a regular working day look like for you?

No such thing. I work when I can and when I want to. I’m very lucky that way. I fit my writing in around my normal life, but I guess it tends to be mainly the evenings I get the most done, working till about midnight, as Suze will attest, as it’s normally around then I click onto Facebook!

10) What are your plans for the future?

First I want to finish this series and get them all out there and then … then brewing in the back of my mind are 2 more stories. One is part written, a stand alone love story and the other is going to indulge my tragic side again, probably more women’s fiction than romance, but we shall see.

  1. Lovely interview ladies. I love how the idea for the book was sparked as well as the different path your life took, turning out even more fulfilling than imagined. Gives hope for those writers out there not doing what they dream right now, that someday... it could still happen. Thanks for the intro to a new series I can see I'm going to have to keep an eye on!

  22. Can't wait to read the book Wendy...so loved your very candid and open interview. I wonder - do you believe in fate and destiny? It seems that so often we try to live our lives a certain way, trying to fulfill expectations or aspirations only to hit forks in the road that take us off those percieved paths..yet I think whatever turn you decide to take they all lead back to where our soul really wants to take us, where we truly belong?
