The Awakening by Melissa A. Craven

About the Author

Melissa A. Craven (the "A" stands for Ann—in case you were wondering) was born near Atlanta, Georgia, but moved to Cleveland, Ohio at the age of seventeen. She still thinks of
Cleveland as home, so it was only natural for Emerge to take place there.
Today, she is back in Atlanta for some reason she can't seem to stay away from the ungodly
heat that makes her long for things like "lake effect snow" and wind that will knock you
flat.

Melissa decided a long time ago that the "life checklist" everyone else was clutching so
tightly in their fists, just wasn't for her. She does everything backwards because she is weird like that, but then, she is an artist and artists are notoriously "unique" and quirky". She is an avid student of art and design, and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of West Georgia in 2009. She worked as an interior designer for several years, but she's always thought she might like to be a writer when she grows up.

In her spare time, if she has any, she enjoys shopping for derelict furniture she refinishes to exercise the interior design part of her brain.

Review by Anniek

Allie is a teenager. She has always felt like she didn´t fit in. People don´t like it when she is near them and they absolutely are not comfortable with touching her. Because of that she has always stood on the outside looking in on everyone else having fun. Her parents travel all around the world because of their job. Allie never stayed at one place long enough to come out of her shell and to make friends.

When her parents tell her that they are moving back home Allie tries not to be over the moon. She craves for a true home. A place where she can stay a bit longer for a while. At Kelleys Island she feels at home instantly. During her morning run in the woods she meets Aidan. He is confused about the fact that she is here. Aidan´s parents are the governors of the Island and should have know that Allie and her parents were coming.

Aidan notices that Allie doesn't shy away when he touches her. He has never had anyone who he could be himself with. He hides behind a mask because it is easier that way. He gets through the days at school and trains as much as he can in his spare time.

On her sixteenth birthday Allie has her awakening. Finally she finds out why she has felt so different all of her life. She is immortal. Together with Aidan and his family she will learn everything she needs to know about her new life and the abilities that she will have. Will she be as powerful as everyone thinks?

Sometimes you pick up a book and it just grabs you from the very first line. The Awakening did that for me. Melissa A. Craven has created a wonderful story about a young girl who isn't an outsider after all. Allie is strong and I loved the fact that she didn't crawl in a corner to whine about what happened. She just accepted her fate and is working hard to come to terms with everything that is part of being immortal. Emerge is an exciting story about a longlasting new life and the amazing abilities that comes with it. This is a series that I will absolutely continue follow. Melissa A. Craven has a new fan.

    1. There is nothing quite like lake effect snow when you live in the Great Lakes region of the US. Glacial winds blow in all that moisture and you go from dry ground and almost spring-like weather to digging your car out of a massive amount of snow. It's really bad when the ice scraper's in your car, but you can't get to it through all the ice and snow. There was one really bad morning when I had to use a credit card to chip away the ice so I could get in the car...
But I'm in Atlanta now, so it's the other extreme of the heat that drives me indoors now.

  7. Question to the author: Any tips on how to get through the dreaded writer’s block?

    1. Lately I have been struggling with writer's block for the first time ever. It's not a fun thing to experience, but I've learned you can't force it. When it's just not there, it's not there. Patience is the key. Walk away from it and work on something else and eventually it will be there and the excitement and inspiration will be back. Forcing it is a recipe for disaster. So I work on whatever I'm the most motivated to write about. As I near the end of my first draft of the next Emerge book, I find the writer's block is fading and I'm so excited to have (almost) a full draft to work with. That's where I do my best work, layering the story through many, many, many rounds of revising and redrafting.

  8. Aidan and Allie are intriguing characters. Allie's life changes so dramatically when she realizes her gift or is it a curse?

    1. It's definitely a gift, but she has some trouble seeing it that way in the beginning. She's pretty stubborn about it at times :)
