Interview & Giveaway: Light a Candle for the Beast by Echo Shea

About Echo Shea

I am an urban fantasy writer, I like characters with an edge and most of my plots are character driven. I've been featured in Portals: A Fantasy Anthology, Spooktacular Seductions, and three books of my own--Manor of Sweet Souls: Gladys Celebrates, Light a Candle for the Beast, and my latest release, A Tinfoil Hat of My Own. I'm currently working on the next and longer piece for Gladys--what can I say? That troll just gets me.

1. Could you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
Of course! Hi, I’m Echo Shea. I’m an urban fantasy author and the review coordinator for Roane Publishing. To be quite honest, I always run out of what to say about here. :) I love chocolate, I love writing, and I’ve got a little puppy that is exceptionally wiggly. *hugs him closer*

2. Most writers have a specific routine when writing their stories. Do you have one?

Hah! Umm…I’ve always had this unformed dream that once I really started writing—and like most writers it feels like I’m always waiting for it to start—I thought I would go and sit down at a desk and write for x amount of time, day after day sitting in front of my laptop on a clear desk, mind clear and focused, working out the intricate plot lines of a story, feet cold and bare beneath the desk, keys pounding out a rhythm as I put story to a page.

Sadly, I do believe I have a routine, but it’s not the one so easily dreamed. I know I’m moving in the right direction when I’m scared and worried the story won’t be good enough. When I feel like plot lines and character strife could easily go out of control, and I feel that everything is just on the edge of going wrong—that’s my routine and how I know I’m doing right. That’s my routine. :)

3. I read that you hide your chocolate. What is your favorite kind (and brand)?

Me? Hide chocolate? Are you mad woman?! I am completely appalled by your accusations. *Shoves candy wrappers into the couch cushions to keep them from view* I like most forms of chocolate, but my favorite is Ferrero Rocher. I keep threatening to open up the window to see if they’ll fly in like they do on the commercials. :)

4. The cover of Portals is amazing and you also used it for your website. Who creates your covers?

Aww! Thank you!!! <3 That cover was actually created by Roane Publishing. They do some awesome covers. One of my favorites was Faerie’s Ring by Jaylee Austin. That was so gorgeous. All of their covers are created by Rebecca Hart and you can check them out at, but I actually have created two of my covers—A Tinfoil Hat of My Own and Manor of Sweet Souls.

5. Who is your favorite character, from all of your stories together so far, and why?

Gladys. I’m currently working on her novel length story and I would love for it to become a series. I don’t know why I just fell in love with her character. I have other characters that I love that they make me laugh or want to protect them from the heartache they’re about to receive or I love how tough they are. With Gladys, there was just something about her person that makes me just want to smile, and slipping into her voice is like putting on your favorite dress or pants—it fits me like a second skin and I feel secure there. I don’t really have a reason for why I love her, I just…it just feels right.

6. You are a part of Roane Publishing. Could you tell us more about them?

Certainly! But which part? I am the review coordinator at Roane Publishing, which means I get to spend time with blogs and readers, giving them a chance to try our work and just state their honest opinion about it. As for Roane, they are a very good.

7. What made you write fantasy?

Ummm, falling butt backwards into something good? I grew up on R.L. Stine, graduated to urban fantasy authors like Kim Harrison, Rachel Caine, Faith Hunter, and the love was always greater than any dissent from others. It just felt right.

8. What is your favorite fantasy creature and why?

At the moment it’s the hobgoblin. I love trying to describe them. They’ve got laughter like dried leaves chasing across pavement, jaws filled with hooked teeth for rending meat, and thick rubbery skin. So enjoying just describing this. A close second would be the boobrie. :)

9. How do you fill in your free time?

Thinking about all of the writing I’m not doing. Snort! Um, I can be found avoiding dishes, and at the moment, filling out Christmas cards and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather.

10. Could you tell us about your plans for the future?

I’m of the mindset that if I’m going to go I might as well go big. So, let’s see, I’ll take some bestseller list action, maybe some awards, millions of dollars… Hah! Okay, how about things I can actually control? I want to write more to Gladys and make her series the best that I can possibly make it and see if I can make it better each time until it almost drives me mad. I want to keep doing my self-published series starting with A Tinfoil Hat of My Own and see where it leads. Here’s to more writing, more chocolate, and sitting on a beach somewhere nice. You’re all invited.
