Frank Derrick's Holiday of A Lifetime by J.B. Morrison

Frank Derrick is eighty-two years old. He doesn't feel like an old man at all though. He's independent and is living on his own, together with his cat Bill. His daughter Beth lives in Los Angeles and he hasn't seen her in years. When there are big problems in her life Frank feels the distance even more than he usually does. He isn't very good with money, but he's willing to do everything to be able to visit. Once he's there he'll figure out what to do next. Frank isn't much of a planner, but his granddaughter Laura is good at making lists. Together they are trying to make Beth's life a little better again.
Frank Derrick's Holiday of A Lifetime is a wonderful book. Frank is endearing. He's naïve and sweet and is good at getting into trouble, but he's also self-reliant and handy with manuals. I love reading about his adventures. Even the simplest things can be quite special when Frank is involved. I love J.B. Morrison's sense of humor and read this book with a smile on my face. I also had tears in my eyes from time to time. There are definitely sad moments and sometimes Frank's thoughts and actions can be heartbreaking. It's the balance that makes this book so good.
Frank Derrick's Holiday of A Lifetime can be read as a standalone, but as there's another great book about Frank I'd advise you to read The Extra Ordinary Life of Frank Derrick, Age 81 first. These stories will make you laugh and cry at the same time. When Frank does something, even if it's just going to the shop, it's always an adventure. There might be problems from time to time, but there's always a way out. He cares about his family and still misses his wife who was more practical than he is. Frank has all kinds of interesting memories, but he's also adapting to modern times and is living in the now. What I like most about him is his passion for movies. It's such a big part of his personality. Besides that he has distinguishing looks that make him stand out. J.B. Morrison makes him come to life very well. I love Frank and think his stories are precious. I love reading about Frank Derrick and am a big fan of this fantastic old man.

  1. This sounds completely different from other stories I've read.
