Gwen never lived anywhere long enough to call it home. She and her mother keep moving. She thinks her mother is mentally unstable as they apparently have to run away from monsters. Gwen doesn't believe what her mother is telling her and she's fed up moving from one place to another. Fortunately she does have a best friend, Olivia, despite never staying anywhere very long. Olivia is spending the night in the new apartment after helping Gwen and her mother with their move. When Gwen and Olivia are asleep dangerous creatures take them from their beds.
Shadows have brought Gwen and Olivia to Neverland. Only they have been separated and Gwen has no idea where her best friend is. Gwen's mother wasn't crazy at all, but Gwen has trouble remembering her. She's forgotten a lot about her life and doesn't remember much of what happened before she came to the island. She's on a ship and the captain has promised to keep her safe, but Gwen has the idea she's a captive instead of a guest. Soon she has to make some very tough choices and she has no idea who's telling the truth. Who does she trust the most and what are the consequences of her actions?
Writing a good retelling is difficult, because there's always an original to compete with, but Lisa Maxwell has pulled it off. Unhooked is a fantastic story. I liked that she set her story in Neverland. It's familiar, but things are also completely different. The captain of the ship for example has different personality traits. He's still dangerous and unpredictable though and he's an interesting main character. There's a lot Gwen doesn't know about her past and I couldn't wait to find out what it was and why she was taken to Neverland. Unhooked is a gripping story that will keep the reader fascinated.
I love Lisa Maxwell's writing style. She has a great way with words and her writing is beautiful. I enjoyed every single sentence. Even though Unhooked is a retelling the story is unique. Nothing is as it seems in Neverland and it's now a grim world filled with dangers. Gwen is a tough heroine who fights for what she believes in and she's a true survivor. I liked that she's got so much personality. Everything is exactly right in this story and that makes Unhooked an intriguing high quality read.
